WINDSURFING SPOT GUIDE: MAURITIUS

Planet Windsurf Holidays give us their guide to Mauritius – “The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues are set in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of south-east Africa. With direct flights to Mauritius from London or Paris or for an exciting add on, indirect flights via South Africa or Dubai, it’s one of the world’s most appealing windsurfing destinations.

Mauritius offers incredible windsurfing conditions, due to the combination of reliable wind, perfect flat water lagoons and world class waves. Often you can find these all at the same spot. Add in stunning luxury hotels at affordable prices (due to the windy season coinciding with the low season hotel prices) and windsurfers really do get the lot in Mauritius.

There are a number of main windsurfing spots around the islands, each offering something unique, so here’s a closer look at two of the most popular,

Le Morne

Le Morne is the ultimate dream windsurfing spot. Imagine a white sandy beach, a turquoise lagoon and shallow water. And it’s all surrounded by a reef, just 600 metres off the beach. Within the lagoon there is enough space for building up some speed or practicing gybes and water starts.

Where the lagoon meets the reef, you will also find some epic wave spots – Little Reef with smaller waves is perfect for those just building confidence on the waves, while the more intense Manawa is for the more experienced windsurfers. The world famous One Eye is really only surfed by the experts.

Planet Windsurf offer fabulous exclusive special offers here at the 5 star St. Regis Mauritius Resort. This property has been voted the best luxury hotel on the island and thanks to Planet, you can enjoy it at 55% off during the winter months, including free upgrades and free massages. What’s more is that kids also go free, there is a complimentary kids club and the hotel offers a range of inclusive activities for when you’re not out windsurfing.

Anse La Raie

The team at Planet Windsurf Holidays regard Le Morne as one of the best windsurfing locations in the world, but as it’s so great, it can get quite busy in high season. So, if you want to enjoy the amazing wind conditions of Mauritius but with far fewer people in the water, Anse La Raie is a great option.

At Anse La Raie, an outer reef belt creates a vast lagoon stretching out almost 2.5km from the shore. The water is not that shallow but protected from the waves by the reef, so it’s a big playground for windsurfers. The wind is generally side shore which makes this is a very safe location.

Located in Northern Mauritius, the big selling point for this part of Mauritius is the big range of amenities, shopping and nightlife. It’s all just a short drive away in Grand Bay. And if its pampering you’re after you can’t go wrong at LUX Grand Guabe. This exquisite hotel has recently been revamped with kids clubs and family pools for travelling with kids, or a secluded adults-only zone with pool and rum bar if travelling as a couple.

So what are you waiting for? Contact Planet Windsurf Holiday today and start planning an island getaway to Mauritius!”
