JP SUPER SPORT 122 2022 TEST REVIEW

VERDICT

A light wind performance machine, the JP Super Sport has a loose and lively nature to add plenty of life to those otherwise marginal days. As the wind increases, a change to a smaller fin really helps to develop its performance in powered conditions.

THE LOWDOWN

The Super Sport series has been updated for the new season, with three all-new designs to provide the “highest pace and performance within JP’s freeride range”. All 234 cm in length, they vary in width, from 70 cm for the 111 to 82 cm for the 133.

Each size is then available solely in JP’s LXT construction, using a fast-growing Paulownia wood for reinforcement under the rider’s feet and along the length of the hull, combined with parabolic rail bands, said to work like stringers along the rail for improved stiffness and extra paint-chip resistance. With a bright, distinct colour-fade graphic, the 122 certainly stands out, and features a scooped deck around the mast track to lower the deckplate position and improve control. There are inboard and outboard footstrap plug positions, and a scale guide incorporated into JP’s footstraps to provide easy reference as you adjust their size. Supplied with a CNC milled G10 fin, the Super Sports all come with a foil-ready Tuttle box as standard, giving them the crossover potential as a wind foiling platform. Compared to others in the test group, the 122 is one of the widest, with easily the largest one-foot off measurement in the tail. The fin box is also positioned further back in the board than others, and the stiff G10 fin supplied is the biggest on test at 44 cm.

BRAND CLAIM

“Sticking to their proven formula of offering easy handling at incredible speed, these freerace shapes are more comfortable and easier to sail than ever. They release early, accelerate incredibly fast and fly freely over flat water and chop alike.”

PERFORMANCE

Taking the Super Sport out in marginal winds initially, it feels buoyant and directionally stable, releasing in an instant, as soon as power is delivered. With easily the widest tail in the test, the straps are outboard yet easy to locate, combining with the deckpads to feel comfortable underfoot, whilst providing plenty of direct feedback. Acceleration is certainly impressive, the Super Sport feeling lively and flighty underfoot, sitting high on the water’s surface. And with its wide tail and large fin, it can be used to cover great distances, driving positively off the back foot to point high or glide through lulls. As the wind increases, we found ourselves pushing harder to see whether a higher top speed can be reached, but try to force the issue and the fin tends to spin-out and release at times. Instead, relax and let the board do the work for you, or alternatively, change to a smaller fin. In choppy, turbulent seas the high riding stance of the JP and the fin’s lift are also noticeable – taking a strong arm to keep both connected and under control. The fin change again played its part here, settling the board and helping to pin it down. Fast and lively, with a committed riding style the JP provides plenty of performance in return, feeling compact and responsive throughout. In transition, it again feels large through the tail, yet drive into the turn confidently and its thin rails bite and grip superbly. It thrives on being commanded by an assertive riding style and can really pivot well through the tail, the width in the rear keeping speed well for a consistent planing exit. And one more point worthy of note – with its wide tail and compact outline, the Super Sport also has genuine wind foiling potential, expanding its light wind credentials yet further.
