VERDICT

Maintaining the Dyno’s sublime carving credentials, this 125 is a pleasure to use, and has incredible versatility, endearing it to intermediate and expert riders alike.

THE LOW-DOWN

The Dyno is Severne’s Freewave board range, more commonly seen in our crossover board test (the 95 L. sibling tested in March ’22 issue). However, with the Fox remaining unchanged in the Severne lineup this season, we thought it would be interesting to include the largest Dyno in this freeride board test. A scaled-up version of its sibling, it retains some familiar design features, exhibiting the brand’s progressive rail design, where the apex of the rail rises as it moves from tail to nose, mitigating the chances of it catching. This is assisted further with some large bevels under the nose and shoulders, whilst the sharp, defined rails in the tail soften considerably up front. Packing in the most volume of all the boards in the test, it is actually one of the narrowest, with a parallel outline and plenty of width retained in the rear before narrowing quickly at the hips, to finish in a squashed tail. The deck has plenty of dome in the rear and there are a myriad of footstrap placements available, with inboard and outboard double back strap options, as well as a single back strap to encourage a more upright, manoeuvre-oriented stance. The four Severne Velcro straps supplied are easy to fix in place using the brand’s Hex4 tool and were one of the easiest straps in the test to adjust to the right size. On the underside, the Dyno is supplied with a thruster fin setup as standard, the central fin being Power Box so not recommended for use in any foiling crossover capacity. Tested here in their standard construction, using compression moulded composite technology, the 125 is also available in a price-pointed Heavy Duty (HD) construction, using glass and wood for internal reinforcement and dressed in white instead of red.

PERFORMANCE

Taking the Dyno 125 out on flat water, it was the surprise package of the test! Using the fins supplied, it feels safe and secure off the plane and capable of carrying large rigs, up to 7.8m comfortably. As pressure in the sail increases and power is delivered, the Dyno accelerates progressively, with plenty of traction through the tail to push against. In powered to overpowered conditions, the fins supplied are excellent, the tail of the board always connected and providing a real sense of response and control. In lighter winds, we did feel the tail of the board was a little sticky, so a quick change to a 38cm single central fin helped to provide an extra bit of lift to release the board. It isn’t a straight-line blasting machine as we see in other boards in the test lineup, although the Dyno’s speed is very respectable, particularly as the sea state becomes more challenging. The ride is cushioned and comfortable, the pronounced vee in the hull carving a clean path, whilst the deckpad and straps are easy to find and provide plenty of connection to the board. The real strength of the Dyno is its adaptability, meaning it’s happy to adopt a number of different riding demands and styles, from freeride cruising to old-school freemove freestyle; from light wind float and ride to high wind coastal bump and jump. It’s real centrepiece though is its carving ability. It is masterful in the gybe, holding its speed throughout as if on autopilot, and masking over any manner of misdemeanours. The same can be said on a wave, floating out in the lightest airs when everyone else is underwater, before carving smoothly like a retro fish surfboard down the face. Who’d have thought you could say this of a 125 litre board in the not-too-distant past?

Bottom shape: Pronounced double concave, which runs all the way back to the hips of the board. From the nose to in line with the mast track, the rails have been bevelled, and from the mast track back, they have defined rails. As the rails tuck in at the hips, the board loses its double concave and turns into a straight vee to the tail.
