SEVERNE BLADE 5M: 2025 TEST REVIEW
The Verdict
The Severne Blade delivers a light, playful and impressive performance with a perfect blend of power and control. The Blade is an excellent control-oriented sail designed to handle all conditions and empowers the rider to perform in their chosen style with newfound confidence.
The Lowdown
Unrolling the Blade, the Severne attention to detail is as present as ever. Branded as their control-oriented wave sail, it features a 5-batten outline that matches or even outperforms many 4-batten sails in terms of weight—an impressive feat. When rigged to spec, the Blade shows a pleasing, progressive fall-away down the leech on the top three panels. The 2025 Blade incorporates some exciting new features. By utilizing X-Fusion technology, Severne ultrasonically welds the foot panels, eliminating the need for stitching. This results in a lighter, more responsive sail with enhanced durability. Severne has also applied its proprietary Gradient Panel Technology, an innovative approach that reduces weight, increases strength, and controls stretch, helping the Blade fully exploit its control characteristics. The Blade is available in a wide range of sizes, from 3.0m up to the largest 6.7m size. While it’s uncommon for wave sails to come in such large sizes, this option caters to riders of all statures and a variety of conditions. Our test model came in Severne’s Anthracite colourway, with deep red detailing that pops against the sail’s deep grey hue. The Blade is also available in an all-red colourway, as well as in the ultra-premium Pro construction, where no expense has been spared. Upon initial appearance and rigging, the Blade is designed to let you charge hard while keeping control at the absolute forefront of priorities.
Brand Claim
“The Blade’s superiority is evident in its construction. Utilizing advanced materials, it outperforms 4-batten wave sails in weight while providing the confidence boost for anything from triple loop attempts to onshore wave riding.”
Performance
Almost immediately on the water and in the hands, you notice The Blade’s feather-light and neutral feel, enhances manoeuvrability and minimizes fatigue during extended sessions. This balanced design allows the rider to fully connect with the board and waves, putting the spotlight firmly on the rider. Control is where the Blade truly excels. Its responsiveness ensures that even in challenging conditions, the sail remains composed and steady, providing unmatched stability in gusty winds. This wide wind range adaptability allows riders to maintain consistent performance without feeling over- or under-powered, making it a reliable choice for varying weather; float and ride, storm chasing or absolute champagne conditions.
On the wave, the Blade inspires your own riding style, responding well to aggressive and attacking approach particularly when sections present themselves. The sail’s seamless transitions and intuitive handling allow the rider to capitalize on opportunities for dynamic manoeuvres. Whether carving powerful bottom turns or executing crisp top turns, the Blade reacts with precision and immediacy, pushing the rider to perform at their peak. The sail’s stability in gusts ensures confidence at higher speeds, while its lightweight construction encourages creativity and freedom on the wave face. These attributes, combined with its friendly but firm power delivery make the Blade a very complete feeling sail that has an intuitive nature to cater for everything the rider demands of it, an indispensable tool for ambitious wave sailors seeking control and performance.
