SIMMER FREEMOVE 126 DURATECH SANDWICH 2023 TEST REVIEW

The Verdict

Simmer’s Freemove is incredibly calming. Never pushing the rider to rush or charge too far beyond their capabilities. Extremely forgiving on the straights and in the turns, this board will be a perfect teacher for beginner and intermediate windsurfers alike.

The Lowdown

For Simmer, the challenge for 2023 was to create a board that would excel in high-speed free sailing conditions while maintaining versatility and ease of use. The result of their efforts is the Simmer Freemove G6. At the heart of the Freemove G6 is its enhanced outline, which features an extended parallel section in the mid-section and a tail that is more drawn in behind the back footstrap. This design is said to improve the board’s control and manoeuvrability. Additionally, the Freemove has a new blunt nose and a thin, flat deck shape in front of the straps.

To achieve the ideal balance of strength and weight, Simmer has produced two different constructions for the Freemove G6. The first is the Duratech Sandwich Construction, which combines a full PVC sandwich with reinforcement in key areas of the board. This approach creates an optimal strength-to-weight ratio and is said to help the board to move with the rider’s movements, generating drive out of turns.

For schools and centres looking for a highly durable option, Simmer offers a wood sandwich construction, which is perfect for daily use. This construction method provides excellent value for those who demand reliability and longevity.

The Freemove G6 also comes equipped with a ‘ready-to-foil’ box on the 126 and 136 models, making it a great option for those interested in foiling.

Brand Claim

“The new evolution of the Simmer Freemove is the unchallenged master of speed and control. For even the more experienced freeracer, control is the key characteristic to go fast, especially when charging open ocean conditions.”

Performance

This board feels as if it has been designed with the beginner and intermediate rider in mind, with a wide platform that makes it easy to plane and a flat deck that encourages an upright stance.

One of the best features of the Freemove is its easy to locate footstraps, which makes it simple to get the board going. The blunt nose shape is also worth noting, as it keeps the shoulders clear of danger while cruising, especially when the sea state gets messy.

This board is definitely ‘cruisey’ in nature, and is comfortable underfoot as well. However, some riders may find that it lacks a bit of spark. This could be due to the fin, which doesn’t provide heaps of drive. But don’t let that discourage you – the Freemove still has plenty of other great features.

The board enters the gybe well, with the rails biting positively and assisting the rider to engage the board on the entry. Driving positively on the exit ensures the board remains flat and fast, avoiding any potential for stalling. Overall, the wide tail and flat deck make it feel secure underfoot, and it will forgive the clumsy footed among us.

So if you’re looking for a good entry-level planing board for comfort in any conditions, the Simmer Freemove is a great choice. It’s super easy and predictable, and while it may not set your hair alight, it will definitely help you hone your skills and become a better windsurfer. Think of it as a modern version of the classic BIC Astro Rock – reliable, forgiving, and perfect for learning the ropes.
