The Verdict
If you are looking for a board to spice up your freeride quiver, then the Carve might just be what you are looking for. Lively on the straights with heaps of drive available, the Carve is fast and fun.
The Lowdown
Starboard’s Carve comes in two distinct constructions – Starlite Carbon and Wood Sandwich. While the former aims to strike a balance between performance and cost, the latter focuses on minimizing the board’s carbon footprint whilst maintaining performance. The Wood Sandwich technology has been the hallmark of Starboard’s construction since 1995 and continues to deliver lightweight boards with a minimal environmental impact.
Beyond its sustainability credentials, the Carve is also a sight to behold. The board boasts a beautiful wood laminate that is instantly recognisable as Starboard’s signature look. But it’s not just a pretty face. The Carve’s design is optimised for performance, with an extended flat section on the bottom of the board and a double concave in the nose that transitions to a flat vee at the tail. Additionally, the board features two double-step cutaways at the tail, which enhances its planing and acceleration.

Performance

In terms of the board’s turning ability, the Carve is a capable performer, especially when the rider picks the right line. Approaching the turn on a broad reach enables the rider to maintain flow in the rig, making it easier to shift the body and sail forward to keep the board from bouncing out, especially in choppy conditions. Exiting the turn tightly requires quick footwork to move forwards on the board. Alternatively, finishing broad can assist in maintaining good trim. Nonetheless, the pinched tail design of the Carve allows for tight turns, responding well to a driven entry.
