The final launching spot for the Carrick Roads or Fal estuary is more exposed. Take the A3078 down to St. Mawes from the St Austell – Truro road towards the picturesque castle. Park in the field below the castle, which overlooks the bay to Pendennis Castle and Falmouth. Ideal for intermediate sailors as the launch site is a narrow beach bordered by rocks. On the left hand side of the field there is a path down to the beach. This beach works best in W, N and NW winds but is also good in SW and S. Note that there’s a lot of commercial traffic here as ships arrive and leave busy Falmouth shipyard. In addition ferries, fishing and pleasure craft are constantly going in and out if the Fal – it is arguably, one of the best cruising areas in the world. Not a major problem as there’s plenty of water for everyone but keep your eyes open. If there is a big southerly swell running, some exciting short boardsailing can be had around Black Rock at the entrance to the estuary.

Getting there: As above

Parking: Field below the castle.

Ideal Wind: N, NW, W, SW & S.

Suitable for: Better intermediates
