2016 PWA Slalom World Vice-Champion, Lena Erdil, is no ordinary woman with no ordinary essentials to travel with; Lena guides us through her kit bags.
This is my Starboard 87 Isonic. I never go racing without this machine! It is my favourite board and my high wind board. I am always hoping that we score a storm so I can fly on it!
That’s an AL360 boom, which is actually one of my smaller ones. It’s my high wind boom and this one is for a 5.6m or 5.0m sail. It covers 160 to 220. This is another essential when I travel to a race.
3. RED BULL CAP
I can never go anywhere without this of course! It protects me from the sun and it looks amazingly cool! I have been asked so many times to give these away. So many random people want these caps. Red Bull though has a strict policy of athletes only for these caps and clothing, it is in our contracts.
4. PWA STICKER
Of course I love the PWA and whenever we compete we have to stick these on all of our sails. I know a lot of people put them on their cars as well!
5. GOPRO BACKPACK
I just recently received this awesome backpack from GOPRO filled with nice goodies inside. I love making movies on the road with my GOPRO and letting people see a glimpse of the pro windsurfing life.
6. GOPRO HERO 5
That’s a Hero 5 with a really cool selfie stick. That selfie stick you can bend in all different angles and at the very bottom it has got a little thing that twists out so it becomes a tripod. You can use voice control with this GOPRO. You just shout “GOPRO film me!” and it does it, it just needs to be turned on.
7. DISPOSABLE CAMERA
I have been looking all winter for one of these and you can hardly buy them anymore. It has film inside and the rest you throw away. It will take 27 photos which means you have to be more selective. It is nice when you take pictures with this one and then it’s a surprise how they turn out when it is developed. As it is a real photo you save it for the very best moments!
The scarf is from my sports club in Turkey. I take it everywhere with me and always wear it on the podiums. I represent them as best as I can. It is Bodrum Sports Club. Bodrum is my home town in Turkey.
The extension of course is essential to rig up. I am using now Point 7 extensions and they work great together with the Point 7 equipment. Life is much easier when all your gear works together!
This is my storm sail, my 5.0m, which is my smallest. I like storms as you might gather! So far I have only used this sail once, which was not even in a race. But it still travels with me everywhere!
11. RED BULL CAN
I always need energy on the go. This can is a Japanese Red Bull! I drink them between heats, when I need extra energy or when I am driving.
Of course we need to protect ourselves so I have factor 50 always! Windsurfing is tough on your skin, out on the sea especially, so it helps keep my youthful looks!
These are new; I bought them for sports actually. I wanted some that don’t fall out easily from your ears and these work quite well. I think they are called Happy Plugs!
‘How the world works’. This is an awesome book about how the world works and it is from a political writer called Noam Chomsky. I pretend to be quite intelligent! I studied politics and philosophy at Sussex University in England; I like to read interesting material like this now and again!
I need sunglasses to protect my eyes and Oakley is one of the best brands out there. They are cool, blue and functional!
I always travel with two stopwatches. I have a spare in my tent. The start is the most important part of racing I think, so I need a backup!
17. MACBOOK PRO
I have my purple cover to keep the sand off my MacBook Pro! I do all my emails and communications with my MacBook; it is definitely a travel essential!
I have just started working with these guys, www.c-fins.de, and have been testing their fins. They are working really well. That one is a 41 which is for my big board!
It is great for mast shots, boom shots and any on board angles with my GOPRO. I even put my initials on it so people know it is my one. We all have similar items in the tents and I went crazy with the pen one day just marking everything. We all have the same extensions, fins and bits and pieces so at least I know which ones are mine!
