PATRIK FOILRIDE 131 2023 TEST REVIEW

The Verdict

The FoilRide’s compact design and light weight provides a reduced swing weight, making it a great companion through turns. It works well with race-orientated foils, and is an exciting option for those wanting to hunt for speed without the hair-raising aggressive feel of a race board.

The Lowdown

As the easiest-to-ride option out of Patrik’s five pure foil boards, Patrik’s FoilRide aims to provide stability, control, and impressive acceleration, with Patrik describing it as, “pure advanced freeride for moderate sail sizes”. The board’s slightly narrower tail compared to the FoilRace and FoilComp, is, Patrik say, to, “Give the rider more control with the back foot more inboard. Also on a freeride foil board the rider will most likely use smaller sails and narrower booms which require a more inward foot position.”

What sets the FoilRide apart is its lack of cutouts, which Patrik also say, “make it steady in acceleration and stable on the take-off”. Underneath is a moderate double concave in the front and middle section, which Patrik tell us is, “for easy touchdown and controlled lift”. It has slight bevel rails and a flat rear middle section into slight tail Vee, which Patrik say gives steady acceleration and control. The brushed carbon graphics give the board a racing look, but it is designed as a pure cruising, entry-level dedicated foil shape with a very relaxed and easy entry strap position, especially on the back foot, and is longer than race orientated foil shapes, which Patrik have opted for to give better passive acceleration. Footstraps are set in outboard options, but there are plenty of positions to move the straps forward for those sailing more powerful foils or riders who have problems keeping their ride height down.

Brand Claim

“Pure foil freeride board for easy learning and fun and fast foil cruising.”

Performance

Set foot on the water, and you will instantly notice the FoilRide’s sharp parallel rails getting to work, allowing the board to pick up onto the plane easily, but gradually, ensuring an effortless transition onto the foil. The straps are extremely easy to find as the board picks up speed. Despite being fairly outboard, they encourage the rider to step in early and use the straps to help drive the board and foil.

Once you’re up and riding, the flat deck creates a seamless connection between the rider and foil, making it incredibly easy to lock in and sail fast. Additionally, the flat deck provides good purchase on the foil, helping the rider cant the foil and hunt for more upwind angles. The FoilRide is the perfect board for those who want to experience the sensation of a light compact shape with a manoeuvrable feel underfoot, as well as those seeking a high-performance experience.
