SEVERNE DYNO V4 95L TEST REVIEW 2024

The Verdict

A real contender for a one-board does it all or the session saver. Early to plane, fast in a straight line, while possessing solid upwind ability, the Dyno compliments and flatters the rider. The Dyno breeds confidence, which may push you into conditions you may not normally feel comfortable in as it adapts to its surroundings, which is a welcome surprise in slower and sloppy cross-on conditions.

The Lowdown

With a fresh colour scheme for 2024, the Dyno features a deep matte red with brushed graphics. The deck pads are jet black with red detailing, maintaining the Dyno’s seamless graphics. Now in its seventh year of production, the Dyno still retains its parallel rails, reminiscent of a compact waveboard. However, it incorporates design features that distinguish it from compact wave boards like Severne’s Nano. The Dyno offers several footstrap options, which allow you to set them inboard or outboard, enabling you to adjust the board’s feel to match different conditions. The volume is thoughtfully distributed in the standing area, reducing bulk in the rails. The tail boasts ample volume to facilitate early planing and carry you through lulls, especially under the back foot strap, before tapering down to a thinned-out tail, providing grip in its freewave mode. When rolled over, an intricate bottom shape is present, starting from the nose, a pronounced vee sits beneath the turned-up nose, enhancing comfort as the board navigates through chop. Bevelled rails are also featured at the front, fading out at the midpoint along with the vee, transitioning to a vee double concave that shallows out to a vee in the tail. Supplied with a thruster setup for bump and jump or freewave mode, the Dyno can also be ridden as a single fin with the suggested 28cm FSW Series fin for straight-line blasting and handling larger sails.

Brand Claim

“The Dyno is the go-to board for all-round windsurfing conditions. The next generation Dyno maintains the tried and tested geometry, and thus, characteristics that the Dyno is known for.”

Performance

Stepping onto the board, it immediately feels comfortable, with the flatter deck providing a solid platform to stand on. Planing with ease, it slips onto the plane effortlessly, and both the front and back straps are easy to locate. Across all conditions, the Dyno proves to be fast and points well upwind. In flatter water, the width of the tail encourages you to drive harder, pushing the board faster and faster. In bump and jump or choppy waters, the Dyno handles chop well, efficiently navigating through bumpy waters, as the vee makes light work of chop. Popping the occasional jump off a bit of chop, it hops into the air and lands with comfort and speed. The volume in the backend helps to carry speed, while the thinned rails of the tail grip the water, preventing any spin out.

The Dyno excels in gybes, carrying its speed well, and the width in the tail allows the rider to draw out their gybes, forgiving potentially less-than-perfect footwork. Placed on a wave and setting the straps inboard, the Dyno immediately feels nimbler, providing just enough responsiveness without requiring expert skills. Even without advanced expertise, riders can reap the rewards of the Dyno on a mushy or cleaner wave that isn’t too steep. If you supply the Dyno with more power and rider input then you can really begin to drive hard into turns by engaging the rails.

The Dyno much prefers to be ridden with more flow and rhythm to match the wave’s pace and sections. If you decide to rein in the power then you can start to place more emphasis on your back foot and crank through your turns, while it easily floats over the whitewater with its well-distributed volume. The Dyno is a really easy board to sail, not requiring you to be an expert to provoke top performance whilst riding.
