NORTH SAILS X-OVER 6.2 2023 TEST REVIEW

Verdict
With a new pumping style, the X-Over generates the power needed to get going early whilst producing a controlled feeling as the pressure hits. Most impressive is its potential through manoeuvres where the X-Over will surely make any rider feel like a windsurfing deity.

The Lowdown
For the regular readers out there, you will notice that we tested North Sails X-Over in the last wave sail test, and with its exciting review, you will understand why we were passionate about giving it a try in a bigger size. North’s entry back into the windsurfing market is certainly exciting, with its innovative designs and incredibly light sails. Weight saving isn’t the only goal however, with the seamless design said to maintain shape for longer making it one of the most durable sails on the market, which in the current climate is an asset well sought after. Setting with a moderate amount of luff curve, the leech falls away progressively and, with some great features, rigs with ease. The combination of the loop-loop-go downhaul and outhaul, along with the ‘rock-it’ batten tensioners, make tuning the sail a rapid process. The 3Di process ensures the sails are laid up to control and redirect the load and tension in the sail. The sail is also reinforced using Dyneema Aramid and load-specific tape to provide the highest level of stability possible.

Brand Claim
The X-Over sail range is designed to excel in all water and wind conditions, no matter what the day throws at you.

Performance
First used in very gusty conditions with big gusts and lulls, the most noticeable attribute of the X-Over was its pumping ability. Very different from other sails, the X-Overs pumping style takes a bit of getting used to but produces some incredible drive once there. Feeling as if the whole sail is working at once, the X-Over rapidly pulls the board onto the plane and once up at speed, it feels as if nothing can stop it. The centre of effort in the sail sits steadfast between the hands as the wind stays well connected, even through the oncoming lulls. As the gusts hit the sails, the dynamic elasticity gets to work, assuring the rider with a very controllable temperament.

On its recommended settings, the sail sometimes feels as if it needs more release, but a quick adjustment to the downhaul soon solves this, encouraging the leech to fall away more. Manoeuvres are where the X-Over really performs. Whether it’s through a gybe, tack or turning on a wave, the sail really makes the rider feel as if they can’t put a foot wrong. With the whole sail working simultaneously, the rider is able to rely on the rig for power at any given moment. Leave the rig on the inside of a turn a little too long, and the X-Over almost corrects your mistake for you. The rig allows the rider to find power where you’d least expect it, making the X-Over extremely forgiving and a reliable ally in challenging conditions.
