GOYA NEXUS B 5.9 2023 TEST REVIEW

Verdict
Smooth and free, Goya’s Nexus B feels incredibly light and manoeuvrable. Easy to adjust whilst flowing through manoeuvres, the sail really feels at home in the gybes. With its steadfast stability, the sail is a huge asset on the straights when conditions are variable.

The Lowdown
Goya’s flagship freeride sail, the Nexus B, is a 5-batten all-round sail with a significant weight improvement since its previous model. Whilst the Nexus B is the brand’s freeride sail, Goya suggests the sail excels in power, speed and manoeuvres in conditions ranging from flat water to bump and jump and a touch of surf. Compatible with both RDM and SDM, the Nexus B is available in six sizes ranging from 4.9 to 7.4m. Goya’s Nexus B is an upgrade from the brand’s Nexus, which is a more cost-effective sail using Monofilm for its main window and panels.

The Nexus B has a Monofilm window, but Bi-Ply and Scrim panels and is available in fluorescent yellow and pink. While the Nexus B is definitely more visual and colourful than the cheaper Nexus, the Bi-Ply used by it offers increased UV resistance and longevity, though the two sails are similar in weight and also performance, Goya say. The Nexus B incorporates the brand’s usual premium features, including a full scrim perimeter, Carbon Stretch Control tendons and a titanium clew eyelet. The Nexus B boasts plenty of luff curve once fully downhauled and is easy to tune with the straightforward rigging dot at the end of the top mini batten providing a useful guide. As with all Goya sails, the Nexus B rigs impeccably without a crease or blemish in sight.

Brand Claim

An all-around masterpiece, the Nexus B puts its number one priority on pure and simple fun.

Performance
In the hands, the Nexus B feels light and balanced, providing crisp and positive feedback as the pressure hits. The centre of effort sits a little further back than most, giving the rider ample opportunity to work the back hand when moving onto the plane. With an incredible natural range, the Nexus B requires little tuning as the wind builds. The rake in the boom yields excellent control qualities allowing the rider to settle into a relaxed posture even when the sea state is rough. Whilst not the fastest sail on test, the Nexus B has a very consistent feel.

At speed, the centre of effort is unwavering, allowing the rider to confidently drive the kit without having to consistently adapt positions or stance. Through manoeuvres, the light and free feel of the Nexus B allows the rider to transition the rig into the neutral zone with ease, freeing up the rider’s attention to focus on committing with the hips throughout the turn, making it second nature to remain connected to the board. Despite its crisp feel on the straights, the sail is smooth and clean through the turns, making it an excellent ally for those looking to improve their gybes. The Nexus B feels incredibly at home blasting in coastal conditions; however, the sail’s range is sure to provide fantastic performance at any spot you choose.
