Verdict
The Force 5 is exceptionally designed for choppy coastal conditions providing ample opportunity to punch through broken waves or handle bumpy rides. Bombproof in design, this sail is a perfect ally for those looking to get out at their local beach for a fast bump and jump session.

The Lowdown
The Force 5 is Naish’s 5-batten power wave sail but don’t be fooled, this sail also doubles up as a strong contender in the bump and jump and freeride arena due to its stable power and vast wind range. The sail is designed in the brand’s classic Hawaiian look and is produced in two colours, orange and blue. Available in eight sizes from 4.0 to 6.2, this year’s test explores the upper limit of the Force 5 size range. Naish claims that whilst the extra power delivered by the Force 5 helps larger riders in lighter winds, the increased handling ability in its upper wind range will be a huge asset to all sizes of riders.

One of the most noticeable features of the Force 5 is its large monofilm window, which is said to enhance the sail’s acceleration, ensuring that the power is delivered directly when it is sheeted in. In other areas of the sail, XS -1577 film is used to guarantee bombproof durability and an ultra-lightweight feel. Naish has designed the Force 5 with some high-quality features, such as equilibrium batten pockets to improve rotation and durability, a radial clew extending out from two titanium clew rings and an ‘ultra head’ scruff panel.

Performance
Step foot on the water, and you will instantly notice the direct power delivered by the sail. Once the power builds, the battens pull away from the mast allowing the draft to adopt a much deeper profile, and due to the x-ply used in the luff panel, the sail’s elasticity has a limit which, once reached, delivers crisp power. With plenty of helpful feedback through the hands when the gusts hit, the Force 5’s punchy nature is complemented by its playful feel in the back hand. The centre of effort in the sail feels high and forward, pulling the rider into a stance that is positioned over the board, making entries to manoeuvres a breeze.

The upright stance is also an extremely effective position when riding in chop, bestowing the rider with more opportunity to flex their legs to smoothen out any bumpy rides. Boost into the air, and the Force 5 really provides the necessary grunt in the sail to kick into a vertical position on take-off. The Force 5 provides quite a classic feel but with an aggressive twist that makes for exciting rides. With the sail’s dual clew position, a quick change really helps trim the sail whether it’s on the top hole for a tighter leech or the bottom to soften the profile and produce more release.
