POINT-7 AC-X 7.0 2023 TEST REVIEW

The Verdict

A speed seeker’s dream, the AC-X is fast and powerful and would have no problem competing on a slalom course. Well paired with speed-orientated boards, the sail has heaps of useable drive that translates well into turns.

The Lowdown

Tested well in previous years, Point-7’s AC-X is back for the 2023 season. Sleek in design with Point-7’s unmistakable black and yellow colourway, the AC-X is available in nine sizes from 4.7 to 9.0, and this year Point-7 has also released the AC-X in a green version. The sail features 5mil Anti-UV X-ply in the base panel, providing protection when it is most needed. Also, the sail’s Anti-UV transparent grey window ensures that it is 100% Anti-UV adding to the sail’s durability credentials, keeping its look fresh over time. The lower Dacron luff panel in place looks to provide extra power and comfort, while the 4mil Anti-UV X-ply laminate is said to ensure high reactivity.

The sail’s X-ply alternate batten pockets maintain the sail’s lighter weight and provide a symmetrical feeling on each tack. Featuring seven tubular battens, each assembled easily for replacements, the AC-X follows a pure slalom foil profile. Finally, the sail’s high X-ply luff panel is sure to provide fast reflex in the sail, suggesting a direct power delivery that is stable at speed. A fierce-looking sail, we were excited to get it on the water and put it to test.

Brand Claim

“Designed for slalom speed seekers, who don’t like the hassle of cams. If cambered sails are not your cup of tea, then the sheer performance specs and looks of the AC-X should be the one for you.”

Performance

Step foot on the water, and you will immediately notice the grunt produced by the AC-X, with the direct power delivery being easy to use, getting the board moving onto the plane fast. One of the standout features of the AC-X is its ability to handle high speeds with ease. It loves to be sailed fast and behaves well with a race board. It’s locked in feel constantly asks the rider to drive more into the board, making it a great choice for the riders out there craving speed and excitement.

The AC-X does feel its size, but it’s not hard to manage, with every bit of power from the sail feeling usable for speed. This is a sail that will inspire riders to push hard and drive on the fin and, with that, will provide heaps of acceleration in return.

Once at top speed, the AC-X feels very composed and maintains this feeling through the lulls. As the rider hits light patches of air, the sail’s flow is maintained well, allowing the rider to stay in position and glide through.

In addition to its impressive speed capabilities, the AC-X is smooth to gybe. Once the sail is set forwards, it feels extremely stable and asks the rider to turn their attention to their feet, focusing on working the board whilst the sail effortlessly maintains its position, creating its own path through the turn. Without a doubt, one of the gutsier and faster sails of the bunch, the AC-X is certain to have you blasting for days.
