GOYA CUSTOM 4 PRO 84 2022

VERDICT

The same magical wave riding sensation, but simply with more range and practicality. This new Custom 4 is the stuff of legend already amongst the team; they’re going to have to fight us to get it back!

THE LOWDOWN

The 2022 Custom 4 Pro is so new off the production shelf that there’s no supporting literature out in the public domain to support it at the time of going to print! The one thing we can tell you is that it’s part of a completely new lineup for the new season and will remain current for another two-year cycle. Produced in a full S-Glass lamination paired with a carbon monocoque construction, the Custom 4 adopts the brand’s reputed Hyper Skin HD material, covering its deck, rails and hull with a high-density foam sandwich, claimed to make the board a third stronger, stiffer and lighter than conventional boards. Finished in a yellow and white livery, with a bold pink logo on the nose, the 84 looks sharp and certainly stands out from the crowd. The signature model of Marcilio Browne, the board’s outline has been refined, its widest point well forward of its mid-point, yet still retaining some width around the rider’s stance and finishing in a well-defined swallow tail. On the underside the shaping matches the board’s clean lines, with a smooth transition from vee with double, to straight double and into a mono-concave in the tail. It comes complete with dual density cushioned deckpads (incorporating a kick-pad) and MFC straps, the rear strap being double-screwed to eliminate any twist. The fins supplied for test were MFC’s QS 300 quad fin set in G10, but the board will be sold with Carbon RTM fin construction and for 2022 they’re now all in slot box. Goya also told us that the board on test was first out of the factory and they claim future models will weigh 6.32 kg, rather than the 6.5 kg the test board was, as it has more fillers, paint, etc.

BRAND CLAIM

“With two years of development to evolve from the previous boards chosen by Marcilio to ride on the PWA tour, we asked ourselves, could the Custom 4 Pro get any better? Yes, and they are now available … The outline on these new quads grew slightly in the nose and tail areas; we have a 4mm wider tail than the previous model. Compared to the previous generation, the rail profile has been filled on the nose and thinned towards the tail.”

PERFORMANCE

When we tested the previous incarnation of the Custom 4 back in 2020, we did comment on its size underfoot, stating that it sits low in the water at rest and really needed to be powered to fully appreciate its capabilities. But what capabilities it had!

Fast forward to this new generation model and we have to say that Goya have fully addressed our reservations … and not to the detriment of its raw ability. This new Custom 4 is every bit the wave machine of its predecessor, but what has been added is that extra bit of ease and float, blessing it with a much wider useable wind range. No longer the ‘gun’ to bring out when the conditions are on, this 84 is the real deal; the board that will make you feel like a shredder, even when the conditions are less than ideal. In marginal winds, it carries weight well and holds its path upwind admirably, its fuller shoulders helping to provide the balance. Deliver power and it releases smoothly and accelerates cleanly, the fittings easy to locate, the connection secure and natural through the excellent deckpad and straps. The broader shoulders also mean this new 84 is easier to tack for its size, giving the rider the confidence to throw one in at short notice when a swell line is approaching. And on the wave face it has certainly not lost any of its sparkle. This is a stunning board to charge on: fast, supremely controlled and simply addictive on its rail. It bites beautifully and makes you feel it can be pushed hard or drawn out to make absolutely any wave section at will. Even in mucky cross-on conditions, the extra little bit of width in the tail helps the Custom 4 to maintain its speed effortlessly through the turn, allowing you to traverse the wave and tighten when required in a snap. A specialist quad providing a special mix of practicality and accessible performance, it had us all smiling like Cheshire cats when playing in the break.
